First British soldier killed, the ‘Troubles’.

Ireland

Gunner Robert Curtis, aged 20, was the first on-duty British soldier to be killed in Northern Ireland’s Troubles and the first to be killed in the line of duty on the island of Ireland since the 1920s. He died during an ant-riot operation in the New Lodge district of Belfast. It is believed that he was shot and killed by a Provisional IRA gunman who was killed several months later.
