In 1788, the Inniskillings landed in Ireland and spent the next three years on duties in Limerick and in Dublin. The following extract from a Dublin paper, dated 25 February 1788, gives an idea of some of the peacetime duties soldiers were called upon to perform:
On 20 February, the Inspector of Excise … assisted by the Land Officer … and a detachment of two companies of the 27th Regiment with two field pieces of the Royal Irish Artillery … proceeded to the district of Ennis to attack the castle of Ogonelly … in which was carried an immense distillery these four years past in open defiance of the laws.
One wonders if the two companies were composed of volunteers. Presumably the attack was successful but the extract does not say what the outcome was, or what happened to the ‘spirit’.
