The 3rd (County Down) Battalion merged with the 6th (County Armagh) Battalion on 15 January 1993, making it the largest infantry battalion in the British Army. The new battalion was titled the 3rd (County Down and County Armagh) Battalion, The Royal Irish Regiment, with its Battalion Headquarters established at Mahon Road Barracks, Portadown in County Armagh.
